How the calculator works
What this calculator estimates
This calculator estimates employment income and taxable benefits for the selected tax year. It then applies the Income Tax Personal Allowance and tax bands for England, Wales and Northern Ireland.
If you started employment part-way through the tax year, the calculator estimates the income earned from your start date to the end of that tax year. It then adds any P11D or taxable benefits figure you enter.
This calculator does not include
- National Insurance contributions.
- Student loan deductions.
- Pension contributions.
- Marriage Allowance.
- Scottish income tax bands.
- Dividend, savings or property income tax.
- PAYE tax code adjustments.
- HMRC coding notices or in-year payroll corrections.
When to ask for help
Ask us to check the result if your tax position is not straightforward
An online calculator is useful for a quick estimate, but some tax positions need proper review before a tax return is filed or HMRC is contacted.
You have more than one job
Your tax code may not give the correct result if income is split between employments.
You earned over £100,000
Your Personal Allowance may be reduced, which can make the effective tax rate higher.
You changed jobs mid-year
P45, P60 and cumulative PAYE figures may need to be checked.
You have taxable benefits
P11D benefits, company cars, medical insurance or other benefits may affect the tax position.
You need a tax return
The PAYE result may be different from the Self Assessment calculation.
